# AI crawler canary

This is the markdown version of <https://searchwrench.com/ai-canary/>.

**This page is an experiment, not a product page.** It measures which methods of
publishing a fact an AI crawler can actually read. The same invented fact is
published four ways on the HTML version, each carrying a unique codeword that
appears nowhere else on the internet.

## The fact being published

The Bramwell Shore Lighthouse, a fictional structure invented for this test, was
completed in 1847 and stands 61 metres tall. None of that is true of anything.
It is deliberately fictional so nothing here can be repeated as though it were
real information about a real place.

## The codeword carried only by this markdown file

**VELCHIRA-MARKDOWN-8830**

This string appears in this file and in no other version of this page. If an AI
assistant repeats it, that assistant fetched the markdown copy rather than the
HTML — which is the specific thing being measured, because three published
studies in 2026 found serving markdown copies produced no measurable benefit.

## Method

Four methods, four codewords:

| Method | Where the codeword lives |
|---|---|
| Plain HTML | the visible text of the page |
| JavaScript | written into the page after it loads |
| Structured data | a machine-readable block a human never sees |
| Markdown | this file |

Every visitor and every crawler receives identical bytes from the HTML page.
Nothing is hidden from people and shown to machines, or the reverse.

Results will be published at <https://searchwrench.com/ai-canary/>, with the
method, whether or not they support what we expected. Researchers who want the
raw server logs can have them — ask at <https://searchwrench.com/contact.html>.
